Geology, Society, and Justice
This course compiles ideas and teachings that may be—and intentionally aim to be—new and unfamiliar to most geoscience students. This course will address the role of geoscience in historical injustices, current political and geological themes and issues, and the future of geoscience and geoscience education. Students will leave this course with a restructured understanding of the role of geoscience in academia and the settler-colonial landscape; all the while, they will become acutely aware of the ties of the field to the colonial and imperialist project and its continued injustices.
This course was taught in the Fall 2022 and 2023 semester with Dr. Lindsay Lowe Worthington in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at UNM.
